After Sharif Bogere withdrew from his July 11 fight against New Jersey native Michael Perez (23-1-2, 11 KOs), Luis Sanchez (17-3-1, 5 KOS) took the fight on short notice in the co-main event of a Golden Boy Promotions card at the Sports Arena in Los Angeles, California.
The scheduled 10-round Lightweight fight was televised by HBO Latino in the U.S.
Perez, 25, used his jab to look for opportunities in the opening rounds, and that lead to a mostly uneventful fight.
Sanchez, a 23-year-old native of Cancun, Mexico, didn’t do much on his part either, but still ate some left and right hands in the first few rounds.
“It started out with my jab. It is something we have been working on and it is really effective,” said Perez, who eventually dropped Sanchez in Round 6 with a left hand.
“I am glad the work I put it showed. I knew I would drop him at some point,” said Perez.
Sanchez would take a long time to get back up and seemed to have trouble recovering.
Then, after a brief look from referee Raul Caiz Sr., the fight was put to an end.
“It is not the weight that I normally fight at but I know that isn’t an excuse. Yes, he dropped me that last time but I was fine,” said Sanchez, who was clearly not fine from the knockdown.
Perez won the vacant NABO Lightweight title as he continues to rebuild his career after a loss to Omar Figueroa in 2012.
