On Saturday night, Miguel Cotto announced on Twitter that he will be fighting on October 5 and that he will be teaming up with Freddie Roach.
I will be back in the ring on Oct 5th on @hboboxing with @trboxing and @freddieroach in my corner…

It was previously being speculated that Roach would be training Alexander Povetkin on October 5 when Povetkin challenges Wladimir Klitschko, but ESPN‘s Dan Rafael put that rumor to rest.
By the way all those reports about @FreddieRoach training Povetkin are wrong. He’s not training him.

Instead, Roach takes over for Pedro Diaz–who also trains Guillermo Rigondeaux–as Cotto’s lead trainer. Early reports suggested Cotto could be facing Carlos Molina, but Rafael confirmed that the opponent will in fact be Delvin Rodriguez.
Oct. 5 @RealMiguelCotto returns to HBO on a @trboxing card to fight Delvin Rodriguez. Cotto will be trained by @FreddieRoach #boxing — Dan Rafael (@danrafaelespn) July 6, 2013
While Freddie Roach is a decorated trainer, some of his fighters–including Manny Pacquiao and Julio Cesar Chavez Jr.– don’t abide by a tight set of rules.
It is possible that in the late stages of his career, Miguel Cotto may want to have more control of his training schedule and Roach may be the perfect trainer to allow that.
