Following Miguel Cotto’s spectacular performance against the former Middleweight supremo Sergio Martinez, the Puerto Rican superstar now has the boxing world at his feet.

With talk of potential opponents sending social media into overdrive, most would agree that a dream bout with WBA Middleweight champion Gennady Golovkin would be at the top of every boxing fan’s wish list.

Throughout the build up to last nights contest, a great deal was made about what Cotto had left in the tank after a lengthy career at the top.

It was considered that the numerous ring wars Cotto had been involved in over the years had significantly left a severe dent on the once indestructible “Junito.”

To the delight of the thousands of Puerto Rican fans present at Madison Square Garden, Cotto was scintillating, leaving the true middleweight champion bemused on his stool en route to a history making victory.

Yet, even though Cotto looked phenomenal against Martinez, would he have the same success against the formidable and feared Gennady Golovkin?

Since turning pro back in 2006 after a stellar amateur career, the technically sound fighter has been cutting through the middleweight division like a hot knife through butter.

His explosive punching power and his superior boxing ability has seen Golovkin rise to the summit of the middleweight division. Still, the strong 32 year old has not had a legitimate threat to his crown as of yet, therefore for that reason a bout with Cotto would serve as a real test for the Kazakh freight train.

There is no doubt that a fight of this magnitude would be extremely risky for both men. However, it would be genuinely captivating to see if Golovkin could withstand one of Cotto’s ferocious left hooks, and if Cotto could hold firm under the power punching of Golovkin.

The fact that both men fight on HBO, along with Cotto’s take on all comers attitude and Golovkin’s search for a big name, means that this fight could most definitely materialize.

But, for the time being, we can only pray to the boxing gods to provide us with a fight that could be remembered for many years to come.

Cotto vs. Golovkin–without a doubt–could be that fight.
