Golden Boy Promotions’ President Eric Gomez told RingTV.com on Sunday that a fight between Sadam Ali and Miguel Cotto has been verbally agreed to.

The fight, which will be Cotto’s 10th at Madison Square Garden, will reportedly be the final fight of the Puerto Rican legends career.

Cotto had been rumored to be considering a fight with Middleweight heavy hitter, David Lemieux, but according to Ring TV’s Mike Coppinger, Cotto realized in his August return against Yoshihiro Kamegai that the Middleweight division is simply no longer an option.

One can only take that as Cotto coming to a realization that Gennady Golovkin, Canelo Alvarez and Lemieux would all send him off in a not-so-friendly head-banging farewell.

When the Cotto-Ali announcement was posted on RBRBoxing’s Instagram account, many fans voiced their displeasure at this matchup, which will be Ali’s first at 154 pounds.

But, in all honesty, Cotto has every right to hand pick an opponent that shouldn’t be all that dangerous. Appreciate Cotto for all of the great fights he gave the sport–including ones against Zab Judah, Shane Mosley, Manny Pacquiao, Floyd Mayweather, Sergio Martinez and Canelo Alvarez.
