On Saturday, October 1, 2016, Nathan Cleverly defeated Jürgen Brähmer at the Jahnsportforum in Germany after an injury forced Brähmer to retire after Round 6, awarding Cleverly a portion of the WBA Light Heavyweight title.
The scheduled 12-round fight was the for the WBA Light Heavyweight “Regular” Champion, which is really just a made-up version of the belt that is actually owned by Sergey Kovalev.
Cleverly had his moments in the fight and was very aggressive, but Brahmer was in control of most of the earlier rounds before an injury forced him to retire at the end of Round 6.
Evidently, a dislocated elbow was the cause the the 37-year-old German’s loss, which is also the cause of a much-needed victory for Cleverly, a 29-year-old native of the UK.
Cleverly hasn’t been the same since losing his WBO title to Sergey Kovalev in 2013, and losses to Andrzej Fonfara and Toney Bellew hadn’t helped either.
Either way, Cleverly can now look forward to a few more fights as he can now be marketed as a world champion.
