On Friday, April 14, 2017, Robert Garcia protégé Jonathan Navarro (10-0, 6KOs) scored a fifth-round TKO against Joan Valenzuela (4-8-1, 4KOs) in a six-round Super Welterweight fight at the Belasco Theater in Downtown, Los Angeles.
The fight was the co-main event of a three-fight telecast on Estrella TV.
Navarro opened first round behind the left hook and right hand. He definitely got the better of the exchanges between the two.
In the second, Navarro invested heavily to the body and the effect could be seen in Valenzuela’s facial expressions. Toward the end of the second, Valenzuela gathered himself and left his chin out signaling Navarro to hit him, much to the delight of the crowd.
More of the same continued into the third as Navarro hammered Valenzuela to the body. Valenzuela showed a great chin and heart as he stood on his feet.
It was target practice for the rest of the fight as Navarro continued battering Valenzuela. The only drama at this point into the fight was to see if Navarro could get the knockout.
In the fifth round Valenzuela was finally dropped on a body shot, and although he beat the count, the referee mercifully stopped the fight at 2:21 of the fifth round.
