Oleksandr Gvozdyk (15-0, 12 KOs) from the Ukraine defeated Mehdi Amar (34-6-2, 16 KOs) by 12-round unanimous decision in the opening bout of Top Rank’s ESPN telecast on Saturday in New York.
The 2012 Olympic bronze medalist won the vacant WBC interim light heavyweight title with scores of 118-110, 117-111 and 116-112.
Gvozdyk started to use his power in the fourth round and landed a hard 1-2 combination that snapped Amar’s head back. Gvozdyk landed 24 power punches in the fourth according to CompuBox.
A stiff jab knocked Amar’s mouthpiece out but he continued to find some success with footwork and solid combinations in the seventh round. . Gvozdyk landed another hard 1-2 combination but Amar fired back a left hook followed by straight right.
Round 12 ended with non-stop action as both fighters exchanged heavy shots.
