Oscar Valdez took a big step forward in his career tonight at the Stubhub Center in Carson, California as he scored a unanimous decision victory over veteran Ruben Tamayo.
The 10-round Featherweight fight opened HBO’s telecast of the WBO Welterweight title-fight between Timothy Bradley and Jessie Vargas.
Valdez, 24, is a two-time Olympian who delayed his professional career a few years in order to seek amateur glory.
The delay proved to be helpful has he calmly broke Tamayo down with combination punches.
The native of Nogales, Mexico landed several right hands before stepping to his right, where he could comfortably land punches at a different in angle.
In Round 7, Tamayo was deducted a point for a low blow, which only contributed to his shutout loss.
Valdez won with scores of 99-90, 98-90 and 98-90.
Valdez didn’t show the knockout power he seemed to have against lesser opponents and he often failed to go to the body.
Nevertheless, he continues his rise in the Featherweight division.
How do you think he does against the top-ten of the 126-pound division?
Here’s a video of the questionable knockdown:
