On Friday, May 4, 2018, Gary “Spike” O’Sullivan took on Berlin Abreu in a scheduled 10-round Middleweight bout.
The fight served as the co-main event to Golden Boy Promotions‘ showcase for up-and-coming fight Ryan Garcia who took on Jayson Velez.
Sullivan, who had been mentioned as a possible opponent for Gennady Golovkin on May 5 once Canelo Alvarez backed out of the rematch, came out strong and looked to make a statement.
O’Sullivan overwhelmed Abreu early on and by the third round it was evident to everyone that enough was enough.
Abreu’s corner decided that their man had taken even punishment before the start of the fourth round and the fight was called off.
As ringside commentator Beto Duran reported from Abreu’s corner, the fighter could simply not do anything to protect himself and his corner had seen enough.
“He could punch, and caught me with a couple of good ones. I came to do my job, and that was get the win,” said O’Sullivan. “This win doesn’t compare to what’s waiting for me–I’m waiting for my next big stage. Who knows? You might see me on the next major Mexican Holiday Weekend.”
