Despite bringing his career to an end with victory over Timothy Bradley Jr., Manny Pacquiao has not produced an ending to match his successful career in commercial terms.

With the main event at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas costing in the region of $24 to host, with the Philippines fighter receiving a large proportion, earnings of just £400,000 will certainly be a huge disappointment to top boxing promoter Bob Abrum.

Having lost his career defying fight to Floyd Mayweather Jr. last year, a third bout against the American Bradley was perhaps not the way many would have expected Pacquiao to bow out of a sport in which he spent over 20 years lighting up the ring.

Pacquiao now looks set to return to his homeland to resume a career in politics. However, controversial recent remarks made by the fighter certainly seem to have effected his pulling power in boxing, with his latest fight certainly proving as much.

His unanimous points defeat at the hands of Mayweather, as well as an uninspiring final victory against Bradley is certainly not how Pacquiao will be remembered however. The only eight division title holder was a unique talent who revolutionized the sport of boxing through his unique fighting style.

With Pacquiao and Mayweather now retired from the sport, the Welterweight division looks distinctly worse off as a result. Attention may now rest on the likes of Gennady Golkovin to produce some much needed hype.

The Kazakhstani fighter takes on Dominic Wade in California this weekend, with a potential fight against Canelo Alvarez being lined up should he overcome the powerful American. The 34 year old is 1/100 on with bookmakers Coral to do so, and you can find an in depth preview of the fight ahead of Saturday’s main event.

As for Pacquiao, with a career containing just two defeats and over fifty victories, he is unlikely to be too fazed by a loss of revenue in his final contest. It remains to be seen if we will see him again in a boxing ring, with the Philippines fighter remaining unmoved by the draw of potential future fights.
