On Saturday, January 16, 2016, Brooklyn, New York will host its first Heavyweight title fight in 115 years as Deontay Wilder (35-0, 34 KOs) puts his WBC crown on the line against Artur Szpilka (20-1, 15 KOs) at the Barclays Center.
The event will be televised on Showtime Championship Boxing in the U.S.
Wilder, 30, will seek to retain his undefeated status against a man whose only loss was against fellow title contender Bryant Jennings in 2014, though he is not considered a top-ten contender by many boxing journalists.
The Tuscaloosa, Alabama native says he is on the path to unify the division after Wladimir Klitschko‘s upset unanimous decision loss against Tyson Fury, but he will have to get through Splika first.
Spilka, a 26-year-old native of Poland, will go into the ring with considerable reach and height disadvantages, along with a hands-down approach that got him stopped against Jennings.
Spilka will have to be more careful against Wilder, who boasts an almost perfect knockout record.
In the co-main event, yet another world title will be up for grabs as Charles Martin (22-0-1, 20 KOs) and Vyacheslav Glazkov (21-0-1, 12 KOs) will fight for the IBF Heavyweight title, which was recently stripped from Fury only two weeks after his win over Klistchko for not agreeing to fight the IBF’s mandatory challenger in Glazkov.
Four men will fight for two world titles, though Tyson Fury is the universally-recognized champion.
