RBRBoxing caught up with Leo Santa Cruz (29-0-1, 17 KOs) after his stablemate, Oscar Negrete, made weight for his February 27 fight at the Fantasy Springs Casino in Indio, CA.
Santa Cruz doesn’t have a fight scheduled yet, but with the recent moves made by his manager, Al Haymon, we could be seeing him on CBS or NBC sometime soon. He also mentioned that a possible fight against Abner Mares could be in the works of both can win their next fights.
On the buyout of his contract: “I didn’t really know too much about that. They just told me things didn’t work out and my manager told me that he [did] the buyout. I’ve been good with Al Haymon, so I had no choice but to go with him. He’s been really great with me.”
On possibly fighting on an CBS or NBC card: “Yeah, I think I’ll be fighting on those cards. That’s what we wanted because there will be millions of people watching us.”
“It’s free for all the fans so it’s a great opportunity.”
On a possible fight with Abner Mares: “Yeah, of course. They were talking about that fight. I think he’s going to fight one more fight; I’m going to fight one more fight, and I think me and him are going to be the next fight, if everything goes good.”
His pick for Mayweather vs. Pacquiao: “Both are great fighters and everything, but Mayweather. I’ve got to go with Mayweather. He’s a lot smarter and quicker, so I think he’s going to take it.”
