On June 12, 2015, former lineal Middleweight champion Sergio Martinez officially announced his retirement from the sport.

“Thank you for everything, here ends a period of my life. I am officially retired,” said Martinez in a Tweet announcing his retirement.

Martinez, 40, held the lineal Middleweight title for four years after scoring a dominant 12-round decision over Kelly Pavlik in 2010.

Wins over Serhiy Dzinziruk, Darren Barker, Mathew Macklin and, in a controversial re-earning of his WBC title, Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. easily made Martinez one of the best Middleweights in recent years.

Martinez has not fought since losing via devastating 10th-round technical knockout loss to Miguel Cotto last June.

Martinez’s body had been wearing down for quite some time, especially after his win over Chavez Jr., which seemed to take a lot out of him.

What was your favorite Martinez win? His outclassing of Chavez Jr.? Or his vicious KO win over Paul Williams?
