This year has already brought us some blockbuster showdowns in the world of boxing, and there are many more to come that are sure to meet the same standard.
This year we have seen Anthony Joshua cement his status as Heavyweight champion of the world after a points decision against Joseph Parker and we have also seen David Haye retire after a second defeat to Liverpudlian Tony Bellew.
In each of these matches we didn’t know which way things were going to go, and that is the same for these upcoming battles, not great for the gamblers amongst you. Gennady Golovkin vs. Saul ‘Canelo’ Alvarez
This sequel fight is one which has been shrouded in controversy, and we can’t wait until the bell rings for these two hard hitting middleweights. The first fight was won by a country mile by GGG, yet a dubious judge’s scorecard left the match as a draw, with a second fight penned almost minutes afterwards.
The fight was then supposed to take place in May but Canelo was handed a suspension owing to the use of a banned substance. On September the 15th however, all of this will be forgotten as the two men take their place in the squared circle. Trips G is considered the best pound for pound boxer in the world, so Canelo will have to step things up this time around.
Anthony Joshua vs. Alexander Povetkin
Despite Anthony Joshua and Deontay Wilder almost confirming a unification fight, and arguably one of the biggest fights in boxing, the British fighter must first face the mandatory challenger for his Heavyweight titles, which is Alexander Povetkin.
Despite Povetkin’s impressive 34-1 record, with the only loss coming against Wladimir Klitschko, this looks like Joshua’s fight to lose.
Joshua is on his way to legendary status, and he will be more than aware of the dangers that Povetkin possesses, especially in terms of his hitting power. Legends can slip up, and Joshua will need to ensure that he respects his opponent, and does the business come September 22nd.
Tyson Fury vs. Francesco Pianeta
Tyson Fury is a true enigma who has taken the boxing world by storm, none more so than when he beat Wladimir Klitschko to lift the heavyweight championship.
After a long period of absence whereby Fury was suspended, during which time he ballooned in weight, try is slowly making his way back into the boxing world.
This fight against a respectable opponent should only go one way, but what the world will be watching is whether Fury still has what it takes to later challenge the likes of Whyte, Parker, Wilder and of course, Anthony Joshua. We will find out the answer come August 18th.
