Vanes Martirosyan (34-1, 21 KOs) earned a ten-round unanimous decision victory over a determined Mario Lozano (28-5, 22 KOs) in the March 21, 2014 edition of Friday Night Fights. The bout was the main event of a card presented by Goosen Tutor Promotions and ESPN.

In his first fight after leaving Freddie Roach, Martirosyan looked sharp and strong, perhaps emboldened by the dedication of his new trainers Joe Goosen and Ricky Funez from Ten Goose Boxing in Van Nuys, California.

Martirosyan landed easy counter right hands very early in the fight. Although they landed cleanly, Martirosyan did not move his head or block after throwing it, leaving him susceptible to counterpunches. Nevertheless, he landed them with ease throughout the fight, including one that knocked Lozano down in the second round.

In the fourth round, a bloody Lozano was the victim of several more right hands and left hooks. Lozano likes to work from a shoulder roll stance, but his ring intelligence was in question tonight as he was unable to make any adjustments regarding Martirosyan’s right hand. It was a flawed defensive style that should have been discarded after the first round.

In the sixth round, Martirosyan was briefly pushed against the ropes by a Lozano flurry. However, despite getting hit with several counter shots, Martirosyan continued dominating Lozano for the rest of the fight.

All judges scored the bout 100-89 for Martirosyan, who will now seek more lucrative fights with Goosen Tutor Promotions after leaving Top Rank. Goosen Tutor, unlike Top Rank, is willing to make fights with Golden Boy fighters.

It is now possible to expect bigger fights in the future with Golden Boy fighters such as Jermell Charlo, Saul Alvarez, or even a rematch with Erislandy Lara.

In the first televised bout, Anthony Peterson (31-1, 2 KOs) won an easy ten-round unanimous decision over Marcos Jimenez (20-5, 13 KOs) in a Lightweight fight.

Peterson began the fight by throwing powerful jabs that were followed by overhand rights. Most of Peterson’s punches landed on Jimenez’s gloves, but he was nevertheless able to control the fight with his offense.

Peterson found it easy to control the fight as he is naturally the bigger man. Jimenez previously fought at Super Featherweight, while Peterson has fought over the Super Featherweight limit of 130 lbs since beginning his career in 2004.

Peterson sought to wear down Jimenez with powerful shots to the body, whose effects became clearer in the sixth round. Jimenez looked worn down, taking a powerful overhand right before the round’s end.

In the eighth round, Peterson landed a thundering counter uppercut that hurt Jimenez. Jimenez wasn’t wobbled, but the punch clearly did some damage. He continued to fight back for the rest of the round, but to no avail–Peterson was in complete control for the rest of the fight.

The judges scored the bout 98-92, 100-90, 99-91. Anthony Peterson is back en route to a title shot in a division in which Terence Crawford, Miguel Vasquez, and Omar Figueroa hold titles.
