After Wednesday’s media workout at the Westside Boxing Club, Elie Seckbach hung out for a bit to ask some questions.
As is usually the case when the gym is empty after an event, there was only the Saucedo Brothers–Jose and Nacho–their dad, El Jefe, Nick Arce and me, Gabe.
The big question that stood out for Seckbach, who also admitted that he still isn’t completely sold on Gennady Golovkin, is how Golovkin would do with Canelo Alvarez or David Lemieux.
My fellow team members aren’t completely sold on him yet and understandably so–despite fighting top Middleweights in Martin Murray and Daniel Geale, we still haven’t seen Golovkin with someone who can really crack.
According to the Saucedo Brothers, they need to see him with a bigger puncher to be completely convinced.
Fair enough.
Nevertheless, at this point, I’d pick Golovkin over Lemieux because of his skill, his more impressive resume compared with Lemieux’s and the fact that we haven’t seen him stopped yet.
Nevertheless, in our mini-breakdown, I forgot to mention that Golovkin had actually called out all the major names at 160 pounds, including Lemieux
In fact, the day after Lemieux floored Hassan N’Dam four times to win the IBF strap, I put out a little write-up about Golovkin’s morning-after tweet, where he called Lemieux out and which tagged Lemieux himself and his promoter, Oscar De La Hoya.
Still, I feel the fight between the two would be much more lucrative in a year or two. Lemieux barely hit HBO and Showtime last year and his last fight was on Fox Sports due to promotional issues.
The fight can definitely be built, and another fight or two for Lemieux on HBO would have fans–who perhaps aren’t as familiar with Lemieux as they are with Golovkin–begging for an eventual showdown between the two.
Nevertheless, check out the discussion in the video below and let us know what you think. I feel the potential matchup raises more questions that it does answers.
