In his last fight, WBA Super Featherweight champion Gervonta Davis (21-0, 20 KOs) made quick work of the undersized Hugo Ruiz (39-5, 33 KOs) in Indio, California with a first-round knockout.

It’s difficult to call their contest a boxing match. It was more like an absolute beating.

Ruiz was stepping in for the injured Abner Mares, while also moving up in weight. The gamble for Ruiz did not pay off as Davis ran right through him. A right hand by the champion saw Ruiz take a knee. He managed to get to his feet, but was in no condition to continue.

It’s clear that Davis is on his way to stardom. The talent is undeniable, but he needs someone to really push him. With the way he looked against Ruiz, you have to wonder if there actually is anybody that will be able to challenge him.

Let’s take a look at who are the best candidates for Davis’ next matchup.

Jason Sosa

Jason Sosa (22-3-4) might not be the flashiest name in the division, but he is a tough-and-sturdy fighter. His record, although filled with losses and draws, can be very deceiving. In 2016 he defeated then undefeated Javier Fortuna to lift his WBA Super Featherweight title.

He lost a highly-debatable match against Yuriokis Gamboa and managed to get a draw against Nicholas Walters. Let’s not forget that he did lose a bout against Vasiliy Lomachenko, but made it a bit competitive in the first few rounds.

He could give Gervonta Davis fits with his come-forward all-action style. How will Davis respond to an opponent that won’t back down even when they are hit with his best shots? Sosa can bring out a side of Davis that we all haven’t seen.

Tevin Farmer

A matchup between IBF champion Tevin Farmer (28-4-1, 6 KOs) and Davis has been brewing for quite some time. These two have a history of not liking one another. The two of them have called each other out numerous times.

Now that they both hold world titles and have continued to look impressive the time is now for a matchup between the two to materialize. Farmer would be head and shoulders the best fighter Gevonta Davis has ever fought. The style clash would be fan friendly as well.

Davis is a big puncher as he has stopped all but one opponent in his career, which is why Farmer would present a ton of issues for Davis. Farmer believes in the notion of hitting, but not getting hit in return.

Farmer could turn their matchup into a pure boxing contest by nullifying the power of Davis. There are just so many different ways that this fight could play out which makes it one of the best that can be made in the division.

Vasiliy Lomachenko

The pound-for-pound best fighter in the world Vasiliy Lomachenko (12-1, 9 KOs) is currently campaigning one weight division above Gervonta Davis, but a match between the two must still be made.

Lomachenko is an otherworldly talent. There is no need to speak of his accomplishments in the ring as they have been well chronicled. Many view him as the best in any division.

Davis is a rising star who believes that he can not only defeat Lomachenko, but knock him completely out. Both Davis and those around him have made it clear that they want the fight. At least that’s what it seems like. So what are we waiting for?

Let’s make the fight. It is one of the very best matches that can be made in all of boxing.
