Staff Predictions | Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. vs. Marcos Reyes

In the main event of a Showtime Championship Boxing tripleheader on Saturday, July 18, 2015, former WBC Middleweight champion, Julio Chavez, Jr. (48-2-1, 32 KOs), meets fellow Mexican brawler Marcos Reyes (33-2, 24 KOs) in a 10-round super middleweight bout.

Julio Cesar Chavez, Jr. is a wild card at this point. Don’t know what we’re getting here. I think this is a rebound matchup after getting embarrassed by the Polish Prince, Andrzej Fonfara, in his last fight.

Marcos Reyes seems to be a puncher of sorts, but against limited opposition. He fought Abie Han (on the Gennady Golovkin-Marco Antonio Rubio undercard), a considerable step up in competition, but looked unimpressive dropping a majority decision.

Make no mistakes here, Reyes is looking for the knockout. I would say this is showcase, too, but against a guy with a decent punch like Reyes, if Chavez continues to take training and conditioning nonchanlantly, Reyes is a threat to be taken seriously.

Conversely, it’s hard to take Chavez seriously at this point even though he had a decent run at middleweight. That said, I still think Chavez is more talented than Reyes given that run and he should win for all intents and purposes.

Prediction: Chavez Jr.

Julio Cesar Chavez Jr., what a soap opera. He should enter the ring with theme song to “Days of Our Lives” playing in the background.

Chavez has a host of issues to deal with. He was stopped, quitting on his stool, less than three months ago. Marcos Reyes is not a pillow puncher, he carries some pop. And to top it off, a game of musical trainers is taking place. Reyes, once trained by Robert Garcia, will now see Garcia across the ring in the Chavez corner. Reyes has hired Nacho Beristain to man his corner.

I would not at all be surprised to see Chavez run for the hills if he gets into trouble. He is coming back into the ring awfully quick. April and Andrzej Fonfara can’t be far from his mind.

With extreme caution, I will go with Chavez. Obviously, being prepared is not something he is accustomed to. His big advantage will be the fact that he will be the bigger man in facing Reyes. The question is will he have the bigger heart?

Prediction: Chavez Jr.

Having lost two of his last four fights and controversially outpointing Bryan Vera in between, Julio Cesar Chavez is in dire need of an impressive performance.

He should get what he is looking for as long as he put in his due diligence in training camp.

Reyes isn’t coming to just lay down for Chavez, however. Jr should be able to tee off but needs to be careful because this could turn into far more of a shootout than he may expect.

It bodes better for Chavez that this is a super middleweight bout as his usual size and strength advantage was null and void against his stoppage loss to light heavyweight Andrzej Fonfara in April.

Prediction: Chavez Jr.

“No way Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. loses this one,” is what everyone said when he faced Andrzej Fonfara. Well, we know how that one went. I am picking Chavez because he looks to be in better shape with Robert Garcia in his corner–which is sort of an Oxymoron–but honestly, who the hell knows.

Marcos Reyes–with Nacho Beristain in his corner–will certainly be ready to fight and score the upset and if he does, I promise I won’t be surprised this time. The thing is, if Chavez loses he should hang ’em up!

Prediction: Chavez Jr.
